Right now the Intel Core 2 Duo (C2D) is the best proc. The E6400 or E6600 are right in the sweet spot of performance. And base on what I have read about the upcoming releases (Intel Penrym) AMD is definitely in chase mode, at least until they get their own 45u processors.
I'm not sure what chipsets are working with the C2D. Last I read, some were really picky about memory speeds. Does anyone know where things stand - are NVidia chipsets maturing?

I'm a newbe about computers and not sure about your question but I understand that you should check for compatibility with your motherboard before buying memory.
I found this site for memory and if you phone they should check for you.

Here's a place you can pick up an e6400 for $268 and an e6600 for $369 .
