Calgary at Dallas

The Calgary Flames have every right to feel positive vibes following a comeback victory and Friday night can clinch their Western Conference opening-round series against the Stars by winning Game 6 in Dallas.

As Pacific Division champions the Flames were the deserved favorites entering the series but have been given all they can handle by a Stars team that didn't clinch a spot until they claimed a wild-card berth with one regular-season game remaining.

Maybe -- and it's a big maybe -- the Flames have finally cracked the code to solving Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger (who has a sparkling 1.63 goals-against average and .956 save percentage in the series) and/or the Stars have run out of whatever magic has kept them in a series in which they've been continually outplayed.

Flames leaning on locker room leadership in pivotal moments

“You make the playoffs because you have some [leadership],” Calgary head coach Darryl Sutter said. “Half the teams do. It’s not like there’s some brilliant moment that falls out of the sky and that’s going to make the difference in the game.”

Jake Oettinger keeps soaking up pressure for Stars with big saves, but he needs more help

The main reason the Stars will play Game 6 against the Flames on Friday night is Jake Oettinger. And the main reason they hope to force a Game 7 back in Calgary is also Jake Oettinger.

The 23-year-old Stars goaltender has masked many of his team’s deficiencies, as Dallas faces a 3-2 series deficit in the best-of-seven first-round series against the Flames. The Stars have been perhaps the worst possession team of the playoffs so far, held afloat by Oettinger’s steady and sometimes eye-popping performances.
