I was one of those who thought the Flames would be able to take this in 5 or 6 games. I probably underestimated the Stars, but I think it's more that I overestimated the Flames. I didn't think we would see the team play a disappearing act again this year, but that's largely what we've had. Tkachuk is a ghost. Toffoli and Jarnkrok have been net negative contributors. Lindholm is getting dominated in faceoffs. Backlund is showing zero offensive flair or confidence. Flames have been bobbling pucks all over the ice. The list could go on.
The regular season Flames were fun to watch, and played with confidence. The post-season Flames are playing like a different, much worse team. Dallas has much to do with that, but the Flames are also really underperforming. Whatever it is that goes on with the Flames mentally once the regular season ends, it makes them a worse team.
Dallas are playing a good game, they're up in the series, and they have memories of being able to knock the Flames out just two years ago. The Flames are playing a mediocre game, they're down in the series, and they seem to have forgotten that they can win.
