Preview
Dallas at Calgary
The Calgary Flames have a pair of recent playoff disappointments to fuel their Stanley Cup hopes.
They both will come to mind when the Pacific Division champions play host to the Dallas Stars in Tuesday's opener of a first-round playoff series.
Many on this year's Calgary squad were part of the heavily favored team that won the Western Conference crown in 2018-19 only to be upset by the Colorado Avalanche in the opening round.
Even more were part of 2020's first-round defeat at the hands of the Stars. The Flames were less than one minute away from taking a commanding 3-1 series lead against Dallas, but the Stars mounted a late comeback and won Game 4 in overtime. They finished off the series in six games and vaulted into that season's Stanley Cup Final.
Six questions to set up Calgary and Dallas in round one
Thanks to a crazy series of events, the Calgary Flames and Dallas Stars are set to meet in a round one playoff series for the second time in three years and just the third time ever. Dallas beat Calgary in six games en route to playing in the 2020 Stanley Cup Finals, while both teams missed the playoffs last season. The Flames went 2-0-1 in three regular season games against the Stars, but as we know, that doesn’t always mean much in the postseason.
Four storylines to watch ahead of Stars’ playoff series against Flames
Here are some storylines to follow as the Stars take on the Flames.
Oettinger’s first: Jake Oettinger’s first career NHL game was in the playoffs, as he mopped up during the Western Conference Final in 2020. But he’s never started a playoff game.
Battle of top lines: This series will feature two of the league’s best lines. For Dallas, it’s Jason Robertson, Roope Hintz and Joe Pavelski. For Calgary, it’s Gaudreau, Lindholm and Tkachuk.
The Stars’ top line was responsible for 45.06% of the teams goals this season, and Calgary’s accounted for 42.61% of its goals this season.
2022 Stanley Cup Playoff Preview: Flames vs. Stars
If Canada is to have its first Stanley Cup-winning team since 1993, the Calgary Flames might just be the ones to do it.
After a 50-win season, the Flames return to the playoffs with a significant turnaround from missing out in 2021's North Division. And they're back thanks to one of their best regular seasons in team history.
There's a bit of revenge on the line in this one. And at a time of season where rest and recuperation is hard to come by, it may be important to point out that Calgary finished the regular season with a three-games-in-four-nights road trip, while the Stars were at home for a week.
Let's see who starts the fastest on Tuesday.
