Bennett also plays with a winger who led the league in assists. He wasn't getting anywhere close to that kind of linemate in Calgary. The only option to get Bennett going was to pair him with Gaudreau, which would have broken up the best line in hockey.
Bennett definitely brings toughness, but lacks intelligence. Not a chance he could do what Backlund does, and without Huberdeau and in the more shutdown focused role Sutter would have had him in, Bennett likely gets fewer points than Backlund too. Bennett was not the answer for the #2 centre in Calgary.
If the Flames are upgrading that position, they need a legit 60+ point guy who is both defensively responsible and capable of creating their own offence.
