The team played well from start to finish. Tons of guys had fantastic years. And most of all, the team is extremely likeable. And they really seem to like each other.
A lot of people were writing Andersson off last year, but he took a GIANT step forward and has emerged into a #1 defenseman. Hanifin is also starting to realize his potential. If you don't like Tanev, there is something wrong with you. And watching Kylington blossom into a legit top 4 guy with the potential to be a #1 someday, was one of the best things about the season. And then there was the Gudbranson/Zadorov pairing - one of the biggest surprises in the NHL, and maybe the thing that pushed the Flames' depth over the top. Pretty awesome year for the defense.
But the play of the top line was something for the ages. Not just historic numbers, but dominance. The best line in hockey, at least since Bergeron's line at their peak a few years ago. And one of the best in a long time. And they were as entertaining as anything we have seen in a very long time. Set plays. Passing like they have played together for a decade... just incredible.
And a shout out to the goaltending, which has been rock solid from game 1 to game 82.
But the single best thing about this season, for me, has been Darryl Sutter. The way he just keeps after it every day - knock 'em down if they get too high, praise 'em when they're down - keeping an even keel. And every day, prep them for the playoffs. But the best thing of all has been his pressers - just hilarious.
As a fan, if this year didn't do it for you, it's probably time to re-evaluate what it is you're doing here.
