After Lehner returned from injury and got his first game under his belt, Thompson sat until he played the Flames. That was Thompson's first game in two weeks. After that game Lehner returned home due to an illness to a family member so Thompson had to play the Oilers (where he #### the bed).
Then Lehner got back to the team and started against the Devils and Capitals in pretty much must-win games. He was pulled after the first period but had only let in 1 goal in 13 shots. The goal snuck through him after the Capitals did their best Globetrotters impression embarrassing the entirety of the Vegas team. Thompson let in his first shot. It was an odd situation and the most likely reason is that Lehner was injured as being reported.

And if you look into the reason why the coach pulled Lehner in a tie game after the first it is because, according to him, because the team wasn't playing confident in front of him.
When asked why he started him, if that was the case, he replied because we pay him to be the guy.
Its a bizarre situation but the fact of the matter is the team lost all confidence in Lehner and were not playing well in front of him.
