Exactly. Toronto let Hyman negotiate with other teams and once he came to terms with the Oilers they planned to negotiate a trade on an 8 year deal. Toronto wanted a 2nd/3rd and the Oilers wanted to send a 6th/7th and when they couldn’t agree Hyman signed for 7 years at the same total $ he was going to sign the 8 year deal for.
If a team wants to give Johnny $84M the Flames could ask for a decent return as the difference in cap from $12M to 10.5M is significant. Hopefully he just signs for that deal in Calgary
