Comedians don’t get old.
It’s a hard life, being on the road every weekend 48 months a year. It’s not something that lends itself to healthy eating, exercise, and good sleep.
Norm MacDonald was never not nervous before he went on stage - that level of stress has to do things to a body.
Now, as far as things you can’t say anymore - let’s not pretend like punting celebrities for what they say hasn’t always been a thing.
Before Bill Maher was on HBO, he had a show called “Politically Incorrect” on ABC. Then, he said “we’re the ones being cowards, lobbing cruise missile from a thousand miles away - staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it’s not cowardly.”
Janet Jackson was just one of the biggest pop stars in the world - half a second of boob during a half time show and she basically disappeared from public life. Justin Timberlake, meanwhile, became a movie star.
The Dixie Chicks were a hugely successful group, and then overnight became radioactive because they had the audacity to be against the invasion of Iraq.
Some of this is “die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain” stuff. Some of it is new groups attaining new levels of power. You used to be cancelled for being gay. Now, if you’re not supportive of the cause, you’re out. Which is unfair, but is it any more unfair than tying a gay kid to a fence and beating him to death?
Great comics keep moving forward. They tell the idiot masses “go duck yourselves.” Because that’s the message that really needs to be delivered.
