Just finished the Jimmy Saville documentary. Beyond the horror of his decades-long abuse, and his impunity from being taken to account for it, I was baffled at how he ever became a beloved national icon in the first place. You couldn’t invent a more creepy, sleazy, weird persona. If Saville was a fictional character, a stereotype of a pedophile, critics would say you were laying it on a little thick. And yet people literally cheered him in the streets and compared him to Santa Claus.
I know the past is a different country figuratively, and the UK is a different country literally. But while watching decades of the guy’s weirdo performances and odious interviews, I kept asking myself what in #### were these people thinking?
