Bethpage is awesome and has a playable course for all levels of player. Yellow or green should be reasonable. The whole facility is cool as hell, so make sure you give yourself time to walk around and soak it all in. It does tend to be busy around the weekends, so expect high activity during that the Friday through Sunday timeframe. It was like watching an ant hill at times. Warning on Bethpage, it is a pain to get to. Give yourself lots of time to get out of and back into the city if you're in or around Manhattan.
If you are looking for something in around the city that is spectacular golf, with views of the skyline, Trump Ferry Point should be at the top of your list. Traditional links style golf in the Bronx right next to the Whitestone Bridge over the East River. Don't let the name scare you off, the golf course is a great layout that is pretty playable for all levels of play. Once you're off the course you'll have to go in and have a beverage to soak in the faux elegance. The clubhouse facilities are over the top and really obvious that someone was trying to create an image for the place that just can't be forced, yet it does.
Another course I would suggest is Pound Ridge. It is tough, but it is a beautiful slice of country club golf outside the city, similar drive to Bethpage. One of the prettiest courses I've played. It is a country club as well, and with it comes a certain air amongst the members that may be tough for some to take. Proper etiquette on and off the course must be observed at all times, which may be a little off putting for some. But the golf course is absolutely gorgeous in every way and is one you'll never forget.
