As a 19 year-old (who will be 19 on September 15), typically, his contract would slide if he didn't play at least 10 games this season. However, he has a November birthday, which means he turns 20 before the end of the calendar year in which he signed the contract, so it does not slide.

If he had been born a month and a half later, the contract would slide.

This will put him in the same situation Gaudreau was in after his first contract, where he isn't bound by the ELC rules, but also isn't a full RFA who can accept offers from other teams. Also, this makes him eligible for his second contract in 2024, while the cap is expected to take a big jump in 2025.

Both of those things combined likely mean that having the contract slide could cost him a decent amount of money on his second contract if he signs long-term.
