100%.
I know everyone seems to be fixated on this season, but how about that 19-20 season right after his career year? 48 points in 70 games? That’s pretty putrid for a guy lining up with the arguably best playmaker in the NHL.
What I see from Monahan today is essentially the same player as I saw in the past. He has a lot of weaknesses in his game and the pace of today’s game has only further accentuated those weaknesses.
However, even though I’ve been one of his bigger detractors throughout his career, I still think he can be salvaged. He still has that big frame and great offensive instincts. So I think if he can find himself a talented playmaker, he can resurrect his offensive game.
We saw what he could do this season on the PP, that hasn’t gone away. It still takes skill to play with skilled guys and he still has those soft hands for a big guy, so if he can find a team that’ll slot him on PP1 with a playmaker who can play with pace and get on the rush, then I’m sure he’ll start lighting the lamp again.
