Yesterday I had an adventure with a very polite Northern Flicker. It came down the fireplace chimney pipe and couldn't get back up. It tapped on the flue and every so often called out (for help, I presume). I opened the ash cleanout hatch into the garage, cardboarded the fireplace opening, and pulled open the flue damper. Then left it alone for a while. Shortly after, I heard some tapping and the fellow made it into the garage and was tapping gently on the window. I opened the garage door and out he went. Thank goodness it worked as chasing a panicked Northern Flicker through the house would have been insane. Now I find myself a shameless Northern Flicker promoter.
Some tapping on the chimney pipe can't possible be worse than the cacophony of a flock of young, stupid magpies clustered on a rooftop or nearby tree at 6am.
