His agent played hardball before and he will be looking for a big payday. We can't afford another $5M contract.
He is the most expendable that also has high trade value so in a tough cap situation, I think we don't have much other choice if we want to keep the top line together.
His goals have dried up in the last 15 games but I'll reserve judgement until after seeing playoffs performance. From the outside, this year looks more like a streaky aberration than something that is sustainable for a longer expensive contract that he would demand.
The priority should be keeping the pieces together that are greater than the sum of their parts - IE: the chemistry of the first line and chemistry of some of our D pairings. Mangiapane is an outlier.
