People have been discussing shows long before the internet. But as far as “water cooler” shows where people
had to watch or else feel left out of the Monday morning convo around the water cooler is a more recent development and was not something that ever happened with DS9 or Babylon 5. Neither were popular enough and neither were mysteries. X-files was close though. It entered the cultural zeitgeist and for a while the whole aliens, smoking man etc conspiracy was pretty mainstream.
Like I said, twin peaks is almost certainly the first, imo. And I think lost carried on the same sort of buzz that x-files had at times but by the time lost came around the internet was way, way more common. Your average x-files fan didn’t have access to online communication the way lost fans did.
