I think Monahan would ultimately accept a buyout. He’d be getting the majority of his money anyway and he’d now have a chance to go wherever he wanted as opposed to wherever the Flames could trade him to. It would actually be a best case scenario for him to be able to pick and choose a team that works for him and the future of his career.
I also suspect there would be some interested parties out there in a league minimum Monahan. He’s still got the hockey IQ to go out there and play with good players and maybe he’s able to find himself another Gaudreau to play with and get back to being in the top 6.
If I was him, I’d certainly welcome that opportunity. Take a small hit money-wise and bet on myself to find the right fit and get a another long term deal.
