I'm there for a story and character development. Without those, you just have a snooze fest. Good for the non-thinkers in the audience, but for the rest of us we need a little more.

I read Dune a bunch of times when I was young, so it’s hard to put myself in the shoes of someone coming in cold. But take my word that there’s a lot more story in the book. There’s all sorts of intrigue around the colonization of Arrakis and relationship between Leto and the Fremen, there’s a cat-and-mouse espionage war between the Atreides Mentat Thufir and his opposite number with the Harkonnen, characters like Thufir and Dr Yueh get their own backstories and scenes, the conflict between Jessica and the Bene Gesserit is fleshed out. It’s more Game of Thrones than Bladerunner 2049.

The film looks great, but it was an odd choice to adapt such a dramatically-dense book into such a… stately paced film.
