I think it was a "oh, crap, he made some sort of joke that in some way involves me, I don't really get what he was saying and might not have really been paying attention but I must now laugh because the camera might pan to me and I have to look like I'm a good sport when that happens because my image must be one of being okay with being made fun of even though I'm one of the most vain, self-obsessed individuals on the planet" laugh.

I've seen both what you're referring to and I've been in situations where this sort of thing happened. What you're talking about is violence with anger among people who are
accustomed to violence and aren't too surprised to respond when it happens. What this was was violence with anger in a situation where people do not usually have to experience violence and are so completely shocked by it they don't have any idea how to respond. This is absolutely what the latter situation looks like. I would bet my house this was not bull####.
