For those who might be like me and looking at those standings and wondering how the Heat and Reign have already clinched playoff spots when 5th place Abbotsford could still catch them, it's because the AHL has expanded the playoffs this year to include a best-of-3 play-in round prior to the traditional 16 team playoffs.

What this means is only two teams in each Division will be eliminated at the end of the regular season. Because the Pacific has 9 teams this year, that means 7 teams will qualify for the playoffs. The top team in the Division will get a bye to the second round and the 2-7 teams will play the best-of-3s.

So, while it's great to clinch this early, it's not quite as incredible as it might originally sound.
