While they're calling it a major renovation, they've alluded that it will be mostly to the 100-level. I'm really not sure about the field but those were some rumors from two years ago. Today they've suggested that there won't be renovations to the outside, so I imagine structurally regarding the concrete things will remain largely as is. I wish they poured money into painting that concrete a different shade or sealing it in a different way. It would change the look nicely as the shade is 80's.
As for grass not possible, I believe it was always possible, but they've always wanted it to be kept as a multi-purpose building and perhaps with the sprinkler systems required it just becomes to expensive to do whatever they need to cover the grass to ensure it doesn't get damaged, for however the Rogers Centre is structured. Seems like a simple enough thing to do, but perhaps the switching back and forth would require too much expertise to not damage a grass field.
