There also seems to be an overwhelming "quietness" to 70s sci-fi. They tended not to bombard you with a musical score. They opted for subtle or no music.
I watched Silent Running on Puppet Guy's recommendation. His review was accurate. It's an interesting concept but doesn't really go anywhere. It wouldn't surprise me if a variation of it was remade.
