Marleau was 38 years old, the Canes were going to straight buy him out and so they were just selling a cap hit - they didn’t even want the player. Toronto couldn’t even afford a buyout.
Monahan is 10 years younger, probably some GMs see upside to him, either with salary retained (maybe even double retained like Foligno) or as a potential deadline asset next year. And look at Rasmus Ristolainen. Got traded for a first last year with horrific numbers.
