Not necessarily. If they can find the right guy with term they might acquire him and use him to bolster the team this year while providing insurance for the future in case they are unable to get long term commitments from Gaudreau and/or Tkachuk.
Using the above example, if they are able to acquire Barzal and have him to build around in the future, it would hurt a lot less if Gaudreau walked. It might also help to convince Johnny to stay. And if Johnny stayed then with Barzal and Toffoli in the fold you can look to trade Tkachuk and/or Mangiapane if they aren't willing to commit or you can't fit them in. Recoup some major future assets and still have a highly competitive roster.
