I blame the refs. Generally in the NHL when two guys start cross checking each other away from the puck as much as Dahlin and Matthews were it escalates. The first cross-check in the back I can see letting go, but the refs probably should have stepped in when Dahlin tried to push him into the net/crossbar, and then gave him another shot as he was getting back up.

Matthews is in the blue paint and the Dman is pushing him out of there which is his job. Matthews gives the first cross-check. The refs egregious error was giving them both 2 mins for all that. How Matthews doesn't get a major there in a 5-2 game with 90 seconds left is crazy.
Matthews is 100% responsible for cross-checking a guy in the neck at full force. Dahlin didn't even deserve a 2 min penalty he pushed a guy standing in his crease.
Puck is irrelevant, you don't allow a guy to stand in the blue paint...ask Sutter
