The PA and NHL actually amended the CBA after the Carter and Richards trades. Players were afraid of this scenario.

When a player signs a contract extension with a NTC/NMC, the NTC/NMC can start immediately when the extension is signed if both the team and player agree to it. In practice, if a player has the leverage to negotiate a NTC/NMC in their extension they have leverage to start the NTC/NMC immediately.


It was first applied to the Getzlaf and Perry contracts in Anaheim IIRC.
