PGA golfers were recently falling all over themselves in their haste to join a Saudi golf league with big prize money. So yes, we in the West seem remarkably selective in which atrocities we get worked into a collective outrage over, and which we pretty much ignore.

* That number has now reached 377,000 dead.
I can't shake the feeling that our education plays a role. We learn a lot more about Europe than the "East". I remember learning about Stalin and the holodomor in junior high, we didn't cover Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge that was in National Geographic not school.

And our mass schooling didn't cover Serbia, Chechnya or really much about the political fallout of the collapse of the USSR. So now I see many people basically being shocked by war in Europe, they thought we were all done with that after WWII. Plus it's the baddies from so many 80's action flicks.
