I've got a trade idea I've been ruminating about, and I'm interested to see what other people think!

To Calgary: Christian Fischer

To Arizona: Sean Monahan (no salary retained), 2023 2nd round pick OR B prospect

Why does Calgary do this?
Firstly, cap space for this summer. Fischer makes $1M and he's an RFA after this season. Cheap to re-sign if it looks like he'll fit here. That's around $5.3M in savings right there!
Secondly, they would get a cheap RFA reclamation project in Fischer who has a decent draft pedigree, a solid rookie season, and then a quick decline into being a bottom 6 center in Arizona.
Think of it as a Bennett-lite situation: would Fischer, on a better team with better linemates and a more defined role, come back to his rookie form? Surely a lot of his issues in Arizona would stem from quality of linemates and just.....Arizona. Low risk, low cost young center who is 6'2" and 215 lbs. It's worth a shot!

Why does Arizona do this?
They love assets, baby! Sure, Fischer is a functional bottom 6 center for them, but if they can turn that into a 2nd round pick in 2023, surely they'd think about it. They have TONS of picks this year, but next year are mostly left with their own.
Monahan brings a big salary, but also has the potential for a rebound, and therefore, more assets! This is a potentially profitable gamble for a team with lots of cap space: if Monahan can bounce back to some degree next season, suddenly he's a big rental center with goal scoring ability on an expiring contract. Perfect trade deadline bait!

Why it won't work:
1) Monahan is quite expensive, and Arizona might not want to pay any more real dollars than they have to.
2) Flames don't see enough value in Fischer. I have not watched him play, I am PURELY relying on counting stats. Maybe he's soft, maybe he had big injuries, I have no idea. I'm sure other posters could weigh in here!
3) Value is off one way or the other. This was just a guess on my part on what absorbing Monahan's contract might be worth. There's a lot of 'ifs' that would go into this sort of negotiation, I'm sure.

I'm down for discussion and some constructive criticism! The main problem I see with a lot of Flames potential trades right now is obviously cap problems and the summer of re-signings. This trade covers a team that has tons of space to absorb Monahan, and a return that could be beneficial for the Flames, but includes risk for both sides.
