Pitchers will generally pitch inside to induce hits into the shift. I don't think a hitter is doing himself any favors by trying to hit inside pitches the other way. I also don't think you really want your power lefty hitter trying to drag bunt too often.
I'm not necessarily in favor of banning it, but it is effective at stifling ground ball hits. Baseball keeps moving more and more to a 3 true outcome game, and anything that helps bring back more ground balls into play is probably a good thing I suppose.
