I think a few things are in play. I think Hrudey wants an exciting game so in part he's pumping up the opposition even when they underperform to make it seem like there's a legit contest. There's also the SN/CBC ingrained desire for marquee players. Hrudey also has his own personal biases. you can tell when he likes a player or feels like they need pumping up - he draws attention to good, but not mindblowing, plays by players he wants to support (eg, Monahan's stick lift - a good play but he called it like it was genius).
I'll say this - it's not as nauseating as the Edmonton crew (though if you read HF Oil, Hrudey is a total homer).
