Teams cannot exceed the salary cap. The Flames have about $633,000 in cap space. Giroux's cap hit is $8,275,000. Therefore the Fames would have to send more than $7.5M back (i.e. Monahan and Dube, for example). Or they would need Philly to retain some of Giroux's salary.
Asking Philly to do either of those things would mean the Flames would have to add a lot more to the trade to convince Philly to do it (maybe a 1st and a 2nd, for example - maybe more)
And the other part of that is that Monahan is under contract for next year as well at $6.375M and maybe Philly wants no part of that, even if we offered 2 1st round picks (which we don't even have)
