Please try to view what I say next as well intended even if to you it seems naïve. I already know I don't know. That's why I'm asking. I'm only seeking to better understand. Besides, I bruise like a peach.

Question: Why not trade for Claude Giroux (my choice as the best Center “for rent” presently available) or at least someone of that ilk right now to get them in the lineup asap? (Put Monahan on LTIR like Las Vegas is doing with Stone and Eichel to deal with the CAP). I know Trev doesn't "believe" in renting but like everything else sometimes we need to step outside our comfort zone.

Ideally (IMO) Monahan is part of the trade... but if not that's OK. Is this year not the best opportunity the Flames will likely have in the foreseeable future? Perhaps we should even consider “overpaying”. What's that you say? Yes be willing to overpay, (using primarily picks and prospects so as to not not upset current player culture by trading away someone's BFF) and just “go all in”?

I know that apparently Calgary is not one of the "top five" teams Giroux would consider. To me it seems simple. Get permission to talk to Giroux. Find out what he “really wants” and simply promise him that the Flames will do whatever is necessary to help him go wherever to make that happen for him next year in exchange for his help right now.

Would appreciate positive, informative and cooperative responses. Thanks.
Yeah, you could ask for permission to talk to Giroux, and see if you can change his mind. But from what I've read, that seems unlikely.

There are a few challenges with trading for Giroux:

1) the fact that he has a very short list of where he is willing to go, is the top one
2) the cap constraints. A lot of salary has to go the other way, and just saying 'include Monahan' doesn't cut it - the other team has to agree to the trade
3) trading for a player now, instead of waiting until the deadline, means that they would be a bigger cap hit to the Flames, which makes it harder to acquire them.

there is virtually no chance they are getting Giroux, unfortunately.
