China could be making a play here offering Ukraine a 3rd option. Ally with China. Russia might give up on their ambitions. Ukraine likely gets a lot of investment from China and keeps their country. Russia is happy that NATO isn't an option any more and they would have to go through a Chinese protectorate to harm them (not that I think it is a rational concern, but you know Russia). China gets a footprint in Europe which I am sure they would love. Unless NATO thinks Ukraine can really win, they might reluctantly agree to it.

It wouldn't be the first time that China took a European country as an ally. They did it with Albania and tried to do it with Yugoslavia.

It's probably crazy, but maybe crazy enough to work. It's worth mentioning that China has been making inroads in Kazakhstan, so they are not adverse to moving in on post soviet countries.
