That's how I see it unfolding.
The hope is that with thousands of volunteers joining the fight, the West pouring material and dollars into Ukraine, they can hold out until Russia falls economically.

Hopefully Ukraine can hold out, but I am not so sure that it matters in terms of how the sanctions would work. The west must keep upping the pressure on sanctions and create economic devastation in Russia. It doesn't look like it will be military devastation. The way out will be to cause as much pain in Russia and that means partly Ukraine lasting as long as it can and the rest of the world holding firm and hopefully increasing sanctions.
