That said, the team is better with Monahan on it, the only real issue is his contract. On the open market he could easily sign for 4M. Which is closer to where his contract should be.

I don't think a buyout or retained salary transaction will be necessary, but if you acknowledge that he could have a ~4M UFA value, then you could just trade him at 2.375 retained (the BO year 1 hit) and skip the 2nd year BO hit.
