A part of us all would like to see some kind of fierce guerilla resistance, but, yes, the reality of that is horrific. Regular people dying in awful ways.
If there is prolonged resistance is that the end of Putin though. It's one thing to get embroiled in places like Chechnya, Georgia, or Afghanistan, where Russian troops are fighting less developed nations full of non-slavic people. Will Russian soldiers continue to support Putin when they are in their own backyard, with every move publicized via the internet.
I agree with you, this is all pretty easy to ponder about from a position of total safety. Who knows that the correct thing to do is.
