After a day spent checking news feeds and photos of familiar places, I was able to make contact with my friend in Kyiv this evening. She, her husband, and their two year old are weathering the storm in Kyiv, with all the exit routes essentially paralyzed at this point. The armed civilians are organizing themselves as they wait for the Russian forces to roll in.
I have a girl who's almost 2 myself, and I can't imagine saying goodbye to her and my partner so that I could strap a Kalashnikov to my back and head out the door to organize with the other men in my neighbourhood, to discuss how we'll deal with a professional army when the tanks come rolling in, all while hoping that the buildings we left our families in are not levelled by missiles.
It is all so surreal and terrible, and I'm very afraid we haven't seen anything like the worst of it yet.
Edit: Ugh... even if true, I regret posting in anger.
