I would disagree that he doesn't "get it". He gets it far more than most all of them, it just doesn't change who he is.

Were....past tense.
He has really screwed himself....but with his ego and love of money that should not be a surprise to anyone. He really misjudged his importance on this.
And to your last comment which is true, its also no longer applicable. He is going to take his "leave" (more likely been told he cannot compete for X amount of time on the tour) and try to re-invent himself and salvage something from this debacle that allows him to save what should be a world class legacy in the sport.
