7th in points does not make him "pretty close" to being a top 5 player in the NHL, especially when during most of that time Johnny brought little to the table other than those points.
Plus, some of those top players might be defence men and goalies. Those two in Tampa Bay come to mind.
Plus limiting the time period to when Johnny played may exclude younger players who have less career points but are clearly better players. who nring more tot he table than just points.
Johnny has been a excellent player this year, no one can (or should) argue that.
But looking at his career as a whole, he's not close to being a top 5 player in the NHL. But he's certainly making a case for himself this year.
