The coffee scene in Calgary has also matured quite a bit over the last decade, and I think it's left them in a bit of a weird spot. Starbucks used to be the "fancy" coffee, so they could justify the higher prices, but now all people who used to pay $4-5 for a coffee at Starbucks have graduated to the better independent coffee shops that have sprung up over the last decade (Phil and Sebastian, Rosso, Analog, Artigiano etc.). Now Starbucks is in the middle of the pack quality wise, but are still charging fancy prices.

For every Starbucks that closes I seem to see a sign saying "Analog Coffee coming soon"
