That's a bit harsh. It wasn't unreasonable to think that the Flames might struggle a bit offensively, or that the focus on being better defensively might bring down the goal total.
On a site where the likes of WhereRUChris O'Sullivan had Backlund pegged for the KHL by 2011, this seems pretty mild. The poster does appear to have some decent causes in mind with the bet too.
At this stage goals per game is at the highest level it's been since the 05-06 season. I would expect that number will trend down in the last 35 games or so to come closer to what it was in 2018-19 which was the last full 82 game season.
At the start of the season I think I claimed that if the Flames could score 220 or more goals, they would make the playoffs. Every year it seems like I do projections you try to be guarded with those, add up the numbers and the total astounds you and you need to go back and adjust everything down. So far most players are actually projecting at the ranges I would have had, and a few are well above that. The goals from the defence is the biggest surprise to me. At the start of the year it was hard to find much offence back there to the point where 25 total seemed a bit optimistic. Not that it's a bad group of players, but looked more like say the 03-04 group which combined for 26 and going into the season didn't have that estalished 10+ goal and 40+ point contributor. I certainly would not have thought the team to have this many goals and that of the top 6 guys...Rasmus Andersson would be dead last.
