Toffoli can be shipped out as easily as he was shipped in, for a worst case of no effect on Gaudreau/Tkachuk. But I think that's the wrong approach. Good value contracts like Toffoli and Lindholm are exactly what you want to make a top-heavy structure work, and you look to make cuts elsewhere.
In particular, Lucic and Monahan will be easier to move on expiring contracts - a buyer could maybe "double dip" by taking them with other assets after the season, and flip 'em at the deadline with retention.
Toffoli won't be the reason if Gaudreau/Tkachuk leave, but he is a bit of an insurance policy if the Flames try to retool. Or they can just ship him back out for a rebuild.
We are better today than we were yesterday. The drawback is almost entirely in the value of the first round pick.
