I am not sure why there is the rush to address either of these contracts in season given the Flames’ record.
From the players’ perspective, they will want to prove that they are worth the dollars and term that they are seeking. From the Flames’ perspective, they likely don’t want to commit big dollars long term until they are sure that these players can finish the season strong including doing damage in the playoffs. The last thing they want is to commit to this core now and then have them fold like cheap tents in the playoffs.
So from both sides, I think it makes the most sense to just wait until the season ends, especially given their likelihood to make the playoffs and the trajectory that both players are on this year. Yes, it might be expensive, but it will be worth it long term if this year is an indication of what we will see from both of them moving forward.
My gut says that both of them sign long term deals with the Flames this off-season.
