As cheesy as they are, if youve never been to NY, I would suggest doing all the big tourist stuff first. The second time you will come here you can delve much deeper into the city, and get a much more authentic sense of the city.

One thing I recommend though is to just walk around. Don't take the tourist buses or guides...just walk around and you will have a much better experience. There are things in this city you will never find out about unless you stumble onto them aimlessly.
