Even if we reached the premise that Monahan had zero use to a team, Marleau and Monahan are not comparable. Marleau came with a $6.25M cap hit, Monahan will have a $2M cap hit over two years.
Marleau also had NMC and it was reported he would only waive under the understanding that the team would buy him out so he could sign with his beloved Sharks. Carolina was actually hoping not to buy him out and have him play for them but ultimately was unable to convince him.
