I think most fans would be happy with they winning a playoff round, winning two rounds would be awesome. Trading away their future for that just seems silly.

The way I look at it is going all-in this year on some pieces for picks/futures makes sense to make the case for Gaudreau and Tkachuk to stay. If it blows up and Gaudreau walks in free agency, you can recoup the picks you dealt this year by moving Tkachuk at the draft/in the offseason.
Buying gives a jolt to this core, who've bought in on a deeper level to a team game than we've ever seen from them, and gives them a fighting chance to make some noise in the playoffs. It's also the definitive 'prove it' moment for this core and if they falter, leadership almost has to rebuild in some capacity with their two best scoring forwards walking out.
