For my take - I personally have a negative reaction to alcohol do to almost non-functional acetaldehyde dehydrogenase enzymes - similar to people with gluten or lactose intolerance and I can understand how its been a lifelong pain in the ass to go to events and social occasions and feel like the odd one out.
