As per Cap friendly right now:
Salary Cap: $81.5 MM
Oilers cap hits: $86.8 MM
Oilers LTIR: $7.86
So the Oilers could go to a cap hit as high as $89.36 (Current salary cap + $ on LTIR)
Kane at $2.1 puts them at $88.9 so they are cap complaint
Here's the thing though, they don't bank that cap space.
Eventually Smith comes off LTIR which means they'll lose his $2.2 MM from LTIR, at which point they'll be ~$1.7 MM over the cap.
Cap + LTIR (without Smith) = 81.5+ 5.66 = $87.16 MM (Max cap hit going forward)
So who knows what they'll do then.
Not only did they prevent themselves from getting a better goalie, but now it looks like they are gonna have trouble even making room for their current crappy goalie.
