Agree he controls somewhat whether or not he gets traded, depends on his contract language but presume he would have to provide the list of teams he would permit a trade to.
You have to try and get some control back for your decision making, highly, highly doubt my strategy pisses him off if played correctly and making every effort to try to sign him. If he doesn’t want to who cares if he is pissed off, he’s not signing here anyway and now you know definitively you need to rebuild.
This isn’t as hard as people make it. Gaudreau understands this is a business. Everyone knows this is a business and business decisions need to be made, obviously yes while respecting sensitive situations like this but overthinking things like you are doing is how you end up having no control and losing a key asset for no return. That’s a recipe for disaster IMO. You don’t put Gaudreau’s feelings over the long term success of the team, bottom line. That’s ass backwards.
There’s a way to do this, it’s not like Gaudreaus opinion needs to drive the bus for the Flames especially if you are starting to sense his intention is to test free agency and if that is the case you need to protect your team and blow it up. If you don’t have the balls to make tough decisions when you need to you shouldn’t be GM. Bottom line Treliving even letting this situation get to where it is where he has zero leverage or play is a fire-able offense but time to fix it post haste before you make the biggest GM blunder in franchise history.

You are still missing the point. He may not approve a trade even to a playoff team simply to pressure the Flames into giving him a huge contract.
