I disagree with you. It's market rate and the best comparable is Callum Wilson. I think everybody who follows NUFC, as well as wider football audience think Callum Wilson was a fantastic signing. Let's compare Chris Wood to Wilson

1. Last year Chris Wood tied Callum Wilson for goals with 12.

2. Chris Wood was born Dec 1991, Callum Wilson Feb 1992. They are 3 months apart in age.

3. Callum Wilson was a summer transfer at £20M. Chris Wood is a January Transfer window at up to £25M. The extra £5M is easily explained by January transfer window + finding somebody to come to a relegation battle + meeting a release clause.

In addition, there is the financial and strategic cost of relegation. Going down was pegged at £100M in 2018, I'm sure now it is more, maybe up to $150M with the new TV deals (that's a guess). For newcastle it's even more, as it delays their longer-term ambition of champions leage.

If I was the owners, and had money, I'd try and spend £150m to ensure I don't go down, as that's likely break-even on loss of funds, irrespective of strategic cost. They need a striker with premiership success who is available and willing to go to to Newcastle. I believe Wood may be the only person who fits that bill, and the price paid is market price.
